The two fresher trawlers operated by Síldarvinnslan subsidiary Bergur-Huginn continue to fish well, while their replacements take shape at the Vard shipyard in Norway.

Last week Vestmannaey landed a trip in the Westman Islands, while sister trawler Bergey landed a full fishroom in Eskifjörður followed by another full trip landed in the Westman Islands.

At the same time, the construction of a series of new trawlers for owners in Iceland continues to make progress at Vard’s Aukra yard.

‘At Aukra there are three vessels under construction for companies in Iceland, Vestmannaey and Bergey, plus one for Útgerðarfélag Akureyringa,’ said Bergur-Huginn’s fleet manager Guðmundur Alfreðsson.

The trawlers are each 28.95 metres in length with a 12 metre beam. These trawlers will each be fitted with a pair of 400hp Yanmar engines driving twin propellers.

‘They will also have a new generation of electrical winches. There will be accommodation for 13 and capacity for 80 tonnes of iced fish. Decisions on the choice of equipment and the layout are taken in consultation with the owners, with the emphasis placed on good working conditions, catch handling facilities and power management. Both of the trawlers for Bergur-Huginn are expected to be delivered in the summer,’ he said, adding that the trawlers are constructed in blocks at Salthammer and brought by barge to the Aukra yard for assembly.
