The Etel Maritime High School in Brittany has taken delivery of Lymaret II, a new training vessel that is expected to form a key part of the preparing the region’s young people looking to join the fishing industry.
Designed by Coprexma and built by Chantier Bretagne-Sud, Lymaret II measures just under 12 metres, it replaces its 9-metre predecessor and its development has been funded by France Agrimer with a €1.37 million support as part of the recovery plan for fishing and aquaculture.
Lymaret II’s name is drawn from the title of the college –Lycée maritime d’Etel – which it will serve.
The new vessel’s formal handover took place earlier this month at the Quai de La Découverte in Lorient, attended by the sub-prefect of Morbihan Florence Bessy, Lorient Agglomeration president Fabrice Loher, Jean-Philippe Quitot, administrator of Maritime Affairs, and the high school’s director Yannick Perron.
Lymaret II is designed with its vocational role in mind, as well as environmental factors. The hull is built of easily recyclable aluminium, it has a 184 kW diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system, as well as solar panels and a battery pack providing roughly five hours of operation before needing to switch to diesel power.
The layout has been designed to accommodate eight students on trips lasting from one hour to one week.
Moored at the Sainte-Catherine port in Locmiquélic, opposite the fishing port of Lorient, which means that young learners won’t have to face the Etel Bar too early.
