Thórunn Sveinsdóttir has sailed from the Westman Islands for the last time, about to be handed over to its new owners, Fáskrúðsfjörður company Loðnuvinnslan.

It’s heading for the Faroe Islands for dry docking and for the gearbox to be overhauled, and will be formally delivered to its new owners to become Ljósafell, replacing a trawler built for the company more than fifty years ago.
Thórunn Sveinsdóttir was built in 2010 by Karstensens Skibsværft in Denmark for Útgerðarfélagið Ós, which was established in 1969 by Óskar Matthíasson and his son Sigurjón Óskarsson. It was preceded by a boat built at Stálvík in 1971 and a trawler built in Akureyri in 1991. The third and final Thórunn Sveinsdóttir subsequently returned to the Karstensen yard to be lengthened.
It has most recently been in the ownership of fishing and processing company Vinnslustöðin, which acquired Ós from Sigurjón Óskarsson and his family in 2023.
Thórunn Sveinsdóttir is one of the famous names of the Westman Islands fishing fleet, having always fished successfully. Sigurjón Óskarsson has a long career as an exceptionally successful skipper behind him, having eleven times been the Westman Islands winter season top skipper, plus he has rescued the crew of four other vessels, a total of 27 men.
