Superba™ Krill oil supplementation recently demonstrated beneficial effects on heart function in an experimental model of heart failure. Pre-treatment with krill oil attenuated left ventricular dilatation and hypertrophy after myocardial infarction.
The study was performed by researchers at Oslo University Hospital, Norway, and included 53 male rats divided into three treatment groups: a control group, a group pre-treated with krill oil, and a group given Superba™ Krill oil only after induction of myocardial infarction. Animals pre-treated with krill oil showed significant attenuation of left ventricular dilatation, heart weight and lung weight, as compared to the placebo group. These effects were accompanied with reduced expression of genes involved in left ventricular stress, matrix remodeling and inflammation.

“The health benefits of krill oil have been previously revealed through numerous studies and clinical trials. Previous studies have shown that krill oil increases the level of EPA and DHA in heart tissue, but this is the first study to indicate beneficial effects on a hard end-point like myocardial infarction,” says Kjetil Berge, R&D Director of Aker BioMarine Antarctic.

Supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids has previously been shown to improve cardiac function in heart failure. Heart failure is one of the most important causes of cardiovascular mortality. “This study demonstrates that Superba krill oil might have a favorable influence on the initial remodeling process after myocardial infarction,” state the authors of the manuscript.

The paper was published 29th December 2011 in BMC Lipids in Health and Disease and is available at: http://www.lipidworld.com/content/10/1/245

Superba™ Krill is sustainably harvested with eco-friendly methods in the Southern Atlantic Ocean near Antarctica.

Aker BioMarine Antarctic is the only krill ingredient marketer that is primary in its supply. Aker BioMarine Antarctic’s proprietary Eco-Harvesting™ technology and on-board processing result in the unique composition of Superba™ Krill Oil and provide full traceability from sea to shelf. The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has granted MSC Certification to Aker BioMarine Antarctic’s fisheries validating its sustainable harvesting and traceability, an exclusive distinction. As part of an established commitment to substantiating krill’s health benefits, Aker BioMarine Antarctic continues to sponsor preclinical and clinical trials with krill oil containing omega-3 phospholipids, consistently demonstrating increased tissue accumulation of omega-3 fatty acids and improved blood lipid profiles.

About SuperbaTM Krill Oil
Superba™ Krill Oil is a pure, natural source of the health-promoting omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) & docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and the naturally occurring antioxidant astaxanthin. The uniqueness of Superba™ Krill Oil is that the majority of the omega-3 fatty acids are provided in phospholipid form. In vitro, preclinical and human clinical research has demonstrated the safety and efficacy of SuperbaTM Krill Oil.
