MAN Energy Solutions has sealed a deal to supply complete power systems for one of the largest fishing vessel orders for a generation. The company will supply main and auxiliary engines, reduction gears and propellers for a fleet of seven 109-metre factory vessels for the Russian Fishery Company.

The lead vessel in the Skipsteknisk-designed series is to be built at the Tersan Shipyard in Turkey with a July 202 delivery date, and with the following six trawlers to be built in Russia.

‘Our track record within the fishing sector is very good but we are especially pleased to have won this noteworthy order as the trawlers will be the largest such vessels constructed in the past twenty-five years,’ said Lex Nijsen VP in charge of Four-Stroke Marine at MAN Energy Solutions.

‘That the customer has chosen an MAN propulsion set-up to accompany its choice of main engine is particularly satisfying and fits well with our strategy of providing system solutions.’

Each of the seven trawlers will be outfitted with an 8120kW MAN 14V32/44CR main engine turning a 4300mm diameter MAN Alpha VBS 1260 propeller via a gearbox that includes a power take-off/power take-home with startup converter. Also part of the package are MAN 9L21/31 and MAN 7L21/31 gensets for each trawler. The delivery for the first vessel is scheduled for June 2019.

These are innovative systems, Lex Nijsen said, explaining that the engines have advanced common-rail technology to achieve the highest possible flexibility and efficiency.

‘This doesn’t compromise the extremely low fuel-oil consumption and maintains an outstanding green footprint,’ he said.

‘This is a high-torque workhorse with floating frequency on board, and operates on IFO (380 cSt) fuel for both main propulsion and auxiliary power generation. The propulsion system includes a four-bladed, 4300mm diameter MAN Alpha VBS1260 propeller with Alpha high thrust ICE 1A Super propeller nozzle class, and we are also supplying an Alphatronic 3000 propulsion-control system with unique features such as customised multiple combinator curves for both speed 1 and speed 2 including floating frequency for outstanding performance,’ he said.

‘There is an 850kW PTI reverse-power mode for winch energy recovery that interfaces via PMS with the SaCoS engine system and Alphatronic 3000 system.’

The complete package supply is to include MAN PrimeServ online service and crew training.

According to Lex Nijsen, MAN Energy Solutions was chosen on account of its equipment’s robustness and reliability, and that the power rating and performance of the 14V32/44CR main engine suited the vessels’ operation profile well. MAN’s ability to tailor its MAN Alpha propeller to suit the vessels’ operating profile was a significant factor in its favour.

The seven RFC trawlers are designed to operate in the Russian Far East with a processing capacity of 400 tonnes of pollock or 350 tonnes of herring per day passing through a sophisticated production deck with a 300 tonne/day freezing capacity plus a 250 tonne/day meal and oil plant. Each trawler is designed to have a 4000 cubic metre fishroom, plus a 1000 cubic metre meal hold.
