The Russian authorities are encouraging fishing vessel operators to switch to the Gonets monitoring system, and claim that the transition is going according to plan.
The intention is that Russia’s fishing fleet will be fully converted to Gonets, minimising reliance on Inmarsat systems, with the switch to the domestic system stemming from a presidential decree to develop import substitution in fisheries information.
According to the Russian authorities, failures of the Inmarsat system underscore the need to switch to Gonets as the basis of gathering fisheries data.
At a recent meeting to assess the transition progress, it was noted that industry participation in re-equipping with Gonets has slowed down, and there is a need to emphasise to vessel operators the importance of intensifying activity in the fleet-wide switch to Gonets for gathering data.
