While the capelin fishery around Iceland currently in limbo while the Icelandic fleet waits for the results of the stock survey this week, Norwegian vessels have taken their first capelin of the year in Icelandic waters, and Russian vessels have taken some early catches of capelin in the Barents Sea.
The first few days of the Barents Sea capelin fishery saw 248 tonnes landed, with two companies from northern Russia and four from Kaliningrad taking part and the bulk of the catch so far was landed by Atlantrybflot’s Kapitan Edemsky.
A gradual migration of capelin from its overwintering areas is expected to continue through both international and Russian Barents Sea waters, with the concentrations of capelin expected to become denser through February and to move into shallow waters close to Murmansk.
