After 33 years with Norwegian fishing vessel operators’ federation Fiskebåt, Paul-Gustav Remøy has retired.
A great deal has changed since he joined the organisation in the summer of 1987, when Fiskebåt had 359 member vessels. Today the number has dropped to around 200, but Fiskebåt is no less active or representative of the fishing fleet than in the past.
Growing up on the island of Remøy, aiming for a fishing career was the natural thing to do.
‘I spent a couple of years fishing and also had summer jobs fishing while I was a student, so I already had some practical experience before starting this job,’ he said.
Leaving Fiskebåt and the world of fishing industry politics behind, he’s heading back to Remøy to finish building his house there.
‘I have more than enough to keep me occupied. I’m still an active musician, so that also keep me busy. Of course I’ll be doing some fishing and I need to have activity that means using my head,’ said Paul-Gustav Remøy, who has seen seven directors of Fiskebåt during his time with the federation, as well as 15 fisheries ministers over those 33 years.
