The Peruvian Ministry of Production has authorised the resumption of the jumbo squid fishery, with an expanded quota and under a schedule with strict control, transparency, and sustainability measures.

The Maximum Allowable Total Catch Limit (LMCTP) for jumbo squid (Dosidicus gigas) for 2025 is lifted from 421,000 to 504,000 tonnes. This measure is supported by scientific data from the Peruvian Marine Institute (IMARPE).
The regulation sets out explotation of the new quota will take place in two stages, between August and December, with specific and progressive allocations based on the carrying capacity of artisanal vessels. It also mandates the mandatory implementation of digital traceability mechanisms, catch limits per trip, and monitoring at processing plants, reinforcing regulation and real-time oversight.
Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Jesús Barrientos, stated that ‘with the publication of this Ministerial Resolution in El Peruano, a decision is made official that responds to the best available scientific evidence and seeks to balance the economic use of squid with its long-term sustainability.’
‘This restart is taking place under clear and transparent rules, with control measures that guarantee that every ton extracted is registered and supervised. In this way, we strengthen formality and ensure that the squid fishery continues to be a driver of employment, national consumption, and exports,’ he said.
