Icelandic fishing company Ögurvík, based in Reykjavík and operating one freezer trawler, has been acquired by Brim hf.
An agreement has been reached for the entire shareholding in Ögurvík to be acquired by Brim, which operates freezer trawler Vigri RE-17. The company’s offices and its engineering business manufacturing trawl doors is also part of the deal. Vigri has a quota of approximately 10,000 tonnes.
Brim already operates three freezer trawlers, Guðmundur í Nesi RE-13, Brimnes RE-27 and Kleifaberg RE-70, with around 24,000 tonnes of quota between them and the company employs 150 people ashore and at sea. According to a statement, Brim intends to operate Vigri from Reykjavík.
‘For us it’s a relief that a well-established fishing company in Reykjavík like Brim should be taking over Vigri,’ said Ögurvík’s managing director Hjörtur Gíslason. ‘It’s important to us that there should be as few repercussions as possible on our crews, many of whom have worked for the company for decades.’
He added that the negotiations for the takeover for the company that was established in 1971 did not take long.
Brim’s managing director Guðmundur Kristjánsssson said that the acquisition fits in with Brim’s activities.
‘It has been shown that the Icelandic fishing industry is strengthened by these larger units, not least on overseas markets where we are engaged in tough competition,’ he said.
