According to the latest figures from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council in august alone the exports of seafood totaled NOK 3.7 billion, an increase of NOK 667 million compared to August 2009. Director of market information Egil Ove Sundheim from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council, said that the growth was continuous, despite the current turbulent state of the world economy.
Egil also said that people are buying more Norwegian Salmon at higher prices and the market is enjoying growth. This shows that Norwegian Salmon as a product has not been affected by the economic crisis. The figure shows that the value of exports of Norwegian Salmon in August totalled NOK 2.5 billion. This is an increase of NOK 606 million or 32 percent compared to August last year. This year to date, the value of exports of Norwegian Salmon totals NOK 19 billion, which is already more than the total for the whole of 2008.
Herring and mackerel exports have registered record growth in the month of August. The exports of herring increased in value by NOK 11 million from August 2009 to a total value of NOK 78 million. Exports of mackerel were up in value by a notable 122 percent to a total of NOK 86 million. The biggest importer of herring from Norway in August was Germany, followed by Russia and Belarus. The biggest importers of mackerel from Norway in August were Japan and Turkey.
