The Norwegian Ministry of Fisheries has announced that it has set a quota for Atlanto-Scandian herring of 429,650 tonnes, equivalent to 73% of the 588,562 tonne TAC agreed during recent coastal states negotiations.
‘We support this decision as a natural consequence of the reluctance of other coastal states to meet Norway’s position on the allocation of Atlanto-Scandian herring,’ said Audun Maråk, director of vessel operators’ federation Fiskebåt.
He added that there has also been reluctance on the part of other coastal states to carry out research into the abundance of Atlanto-Scandian herring in their EEZs.
‘Going by the previous report on zonal attachment, the Norwegian share should be significantly higher than what the Ministry of Fisheries has allocated for 2019,’ he said, adding that he hopes there will be an agreement between the coastal states.
