The new net loft in the Danish port of Skagen has been built by Cosmos Trawl, the Danish subsidiary of the Hampiðjan Group, and the inauguration of the new building marks a milestone in the company’s development.
The Skagen net loft is designed to meet the needs of the fleet, which increasingly consists of large pelagic vessels, and the new facility has been outfitted with this in mind. There are four trawl tracks in the new building – while the old net loft had only two – and the array of winches and net drums in the new building makes handling large pelagic gears faster and more efficient.
‘The development of Cosmos Trawl in Skagen is a major step forward and reflects our desire to increase services to the fishing industry in Denmark, which has developed rapidly over the past decades,’ said Hampiðjan CEO Hjörtur Erlendsson.
‘The fishing fleet, particularly in pelagic fishing, has some of the largest and most advanced vessels in the world. To service these ships, we need large, advanced facilities, equipped with the best possible machinery to handle their increasingly sophisticated fishing gear, made with new materials and more efficient designs.’
The workshop floor is laid out with six large trawl drums, complemented by winches and overhead cranes, all of which helps streamline the production and repair of trawl gear and codends. The new net loft is located adjacent to the Skagen quayside, allowing fishing gear to be spooled into the building and back out to fishing vessels at the quay.
Cosmos Trawl’s managing director Michael Lassen commented that the 5000 square metre building is specially designed to increase the company’s ability to serve its customers.
‘The new net workshop is a significant investment for us. It enables us to handle larger fishing gear, improves working conditions, and increases efficiency. Therefore, it strongly supports our future plans for expansion in Skagen and elsewhere in Denmark,’ he said.
Mayor of Frederikshavn Birgit S. Hansen stressed the importance of the new facility for the local community and the Danish fishing industry by bringing increased service capacity to support the fishing industry in Denmark.
