A Spanish fishing company is on the receiving end of a fine totalling 1.8 billion Argentine pesos – around one million euros – after one of its vessels was identified infringing Argentina’s 200-mile limit.
This is the fifth fishing vessel this year to have been identified crossing the mile-200 line while fishing as part of an extensive monitoring programme by Argentinean agencies. This is a joint initiative by the Argentine Navy, Coast Guard and Undersecretariat of Aquatic Resources and Fisheries.
This time the Spanish-flagged Farruco was observed using electronic detection technology that tracks vessels and determines activity.
Farruco is owned by a company based in the Canary islands, although the vessel operates in the South Atlantic from its base in Montevideo.
