The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, has that Ms. Faith Scattolon was appointed as a Canadian Commissioner to the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). She said that it is pleasure to have Scattalon to represent Canada as a Commissioner to ICCAT. Minister Shea also said that Canada will be well-served by her experience and her extensive knowledge of Atlantic fisheries, especially the swordfish and bluefin tuna fisheries.
ICCAT is a regional fisheries management organization responsible for the management of tuna, swordfish and other related large pelagics in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. It is told that ICCAT has currently 48 Contracting Parties to ICCAT that range from North, South and Central America to Europe and Africa, as well as distant water fishing nations in Asia.
It is informed that Canada has been a member of the organization since it was established in 1969. Faith Scattolon is currently Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Director General, Maritimes Region, a region which accounts for more than 90 percent of
Canada’s swordfish landings and close to 50% of its bluefin landings.
