The Slippurinn yard in Akureyri has completed the installation of a new catch handing deck on board Samherji’s 58 metre fresher trawler Björg EA-7, which was built at the Cemre yard in Turkey in 2017.
The innovative catch handling installation operates on the basis of an automated magazine in the fishroom transferring empty tubs to the catch handling deck to be filled.
An elevator takes the full tubs down to the fishroom to be stacked in a magazine capable of holding up to 35 tubs.
The system is based on an earlier arrangement that the yard developed and installed on board Kaldbakur, and which has performed well.
‘The fishroom system improved working conditions for the deck crew, as it makes the work lighter and also safer,’ said Björg’s chief engineer Kjartan Vilbergsson.
‘It’s a real advantage that the system is simple and effective. We tried out the new system during a bad weather trip and it worked seamlessly.’
During the installation, Slippurin staff also carried out necessary routine maintenance. A slush ice system was installed and some minor alterations were made to the front end of the processing line to adjust it to work with the new fishroom system and tub handling. Björg was also dry-docked, painted, and the main engine overhauled.
