Iceland’s Minister of Food, Fisheries and Agriculture, Svandís Svavarsdóttir, has increased the allocation of quota available this year to small-scale fishing vessels operating within the coastal fishery regime.
An additional 1074 tonnes has been made available through exchanges for mackerel quota, plus unused quota tonnages from the leisure fishing sector and the additional quota allowed for hand-baited longline fishing.
This increases to 5% the share of the allowable cod quota allocated to the coastal fishery, and this is a higher proportion than ever before.
According to the Ministry, this decision is part of a series of measures to provide the coastal fishery with a strong basis, and this is the fourteenth summer that this fishery has taken place.
