Fourteen crew of a Faroese longliner have been rescued after the 46-metre Kambur was hit by heavy seas and transmitted a distress call early this morning. Two of Kambur’s crew are still missing.
Tóshavn MRCC reports that Coast Guard vessel Brimil has been dospatched to the location and they are co-ordinating the search – although conditions are very difficult, which hampers any further rescue operations.
The incident occurred just after 0700 today and a rescue helicopter was immediately scrambled, while vessels in the area diverted to Kambur’s position.
The situation on board Kambur rapidly deteriorated. 13 of the crew were lifted on board the helicopter, which took them to the Suðuroy Hospital in Tvøroyri before returning to the scene to fetch the remaining crew members. One who had been on the vessel’s side for three hours was recovered, while two are still missing. Kambur sank 90 minutes later.
One of the larger longliners under the Faroese flag, Kambur joined the fleet in 2020.
