Fishermen in Kamchatka are traditionally the first to start fishing salmon as the season opens. This year the Russian Far East salmon catch is expected to be more than 490,000 tonnes, making it the largest projected fishery in recent years.
The new Russian Pollock factory, a joint venture between The Russian Fishery Company (RFC) and the DV Invest, will net an additional 14,500 tonnes of pollock and herring quotas once it is operational. The factory, due to be built in the Nadezhdinskaya priority development territory near Vladivostok, represents an investment of $12-15 million.
The port of Arkhangelsk on Russia’s northern coast expects to see a growing supply of fish from the Far East this year. According to the regional director Igor Orlov, negotiations are in progress to bring more raw material to Arkhangelsk from the Russian Far East.
Measures taken by Russia and Norway from 2015 to regulate the snow crab fishery have been shown to have been effective in restricting third-country access and blocking IUU activity. Joint efforts in fisheries management were discussed by the Russian and Norwegian fisheries ministers at the Global Seafood Exhibition last week in Brussels.
The Russian Fishery Company (RFC) plans to start construction of its Russian Pollock fish processing factory this year. The processing capacity of the factory will be capable of processing more 60,000 tonnes of pollock into 25,000 tonnes of high value-added products.
After two years with no capelin fishery in the Barents Sea, Russian vessels have this year declared catches of 66,000 tonnes of capelin, a 30% increase on the last season’s total in 2015.
Russia’s Federal Agency for Fisheries is making plans for the renewal of the coastal fleet, preparing mechanisms for coastal fishing’s development by providing state support for regions where investment quotas are not applicable. This applies to coastal and freshwater regions where around 75% of resources are though to be under-utilised.
The first contracts for the allocation of investment quotas, the Russian government’s mechanism designed to boost the renewal of the fishing fleet and processing sector, have been signed at a meeting of the board of the Federal Agency for Fisheries (Rosrybolvstvo), in the presence of agriculture minister Alexander Tkachev.
The Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad has launched the second of three pelagic vessels being built for a company in Russia’s Far East. The fleet of three Skipskompetanse-designed pelagic catchers is due to be delivered to the customer in 2019.
The Nerpa shipyard, a branch of JSC ZS Zvezdochka, part of Russian shipbuilding conglomerate United Shipbuilding Corporation, is gearing up to expand its activities in the fishing sector.
