Greenland Arctic whitefish fisheries enter MSC assessments

Greenland’s cod, haddock and saithe fisheries in the North East Arctic area of the Barents Sea have entered MSC assessment.
The West Greenland cold water prawn trawl fishery today became the first Greenland fishery to achieve certification to the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) global standard for sustainable and well-managed fisheries. Cold water prawns (Pandalus borealis) harvested by this fishery are now eligible to bear the blue MSC ecolabel – an assurance to buyers and shoppers that the product originates from a certified source. The assessment was carried out by independent certifier Intertek Moody Marine LTD.
The Greenlandic shrimp trawler m/tr Akamalik has made an outstanding trip. They caught shrimps worth astonishing 11 millions DKK in only 9 days.

Environment groups are worried that Greenland will fail to renew salmon fishing ban to conserve its stocks.
A strong improvement in performance with 159 million DKK in operating profit and 195 million DKK before tax achieved in the year 2009/10.
With an improvement in primary operating profits of DKK 82 million and DKK 100 million before tax in relation to H1 2008/2009, Royal Greenland has shown positive development. The net result is a deficit of DKK 57 million, which confirms the budgeted forecast for the interim.

At Royal Greenland’s yearly general meeting the 18th of January 2010 Niels de Coninck-Smith was elected Chairman of the Board of the fishing corporation. He will succeed Peter Grønvold Samuelsen, who has held the position for the last three years.
