The optimism among the Snow Crab fishermen in Newfoundland is high. The landed value of the Snow Crabs is 61% higher than last year, and a report from Fisheries and Oceans Canada states that the value of the Snow Crab landings in Newfoundland in 2011 is $250 million. This is the highest since 2004.
In June, the M/V Jupiter FD42 got a new 2048 metre trawl intended for pair trawling in the surface for Mackerel. Already after the first tow, Cpt. Emil Petersen realized that this trawl was extremely light to tow compared to other trawls of the same size and, at the same time had a very large opening. The crew on the “Jupiter” also soon discovered that the catches of mackerel were quite high compared to the towing time.

Our sales manager at Vónin Canada mr. Jan Klein was on a trip with one of Canda’s larger shrimp trawlers – the Labrador Storm. They were fishing in the Hopedale area where the depth is around 150 fathoms. The Labrador Storm is towing one trawl and the fishing was fair this trip.
The Injector Shark trawl door is invading the Canadian market. Vónin Canada has for the last couple of weeks delivered 8 sets of Injector Shark trawl doors. 7 of the these have been for the inshore trawlers with sizes ranging from 3,8m2 and up to 4m2. A set of 11m2 has also been delivered to one of the larger offshore vessels.
Sales manager Jan Klein at Vónin Canada says that the demand for these doors is massive and the feedback is very positive.

The 14 crew of the Faroese-registered Fishing trawler Vardborg were about six miles off Fraserburgh when the alarm was raised just after 0025BST today Monday July 1st.
