1200 tonnes of quota in the Russian zone of the Barents Sea was yesterday auctioned in the Faroe Islands.

Gerda Maria was the breakthrough to the Norwegian market, Jógvan S Jacobsen at Vónin’s pelagic division said. During the winter of 2014, the Norwegian pelagic vessel was fishing for capelin in Icelandic waters, landing some of its trips in Fuglafjørður.

‘Now we are at the point after three years of testing and refinement that the TrawlCamera with a live feed is a commercial product – although the development process never ends,’ said Rúni Petersen of JT electric’s TrawlCamera.

Faroese authorities boarded four French trawlers in a closed area east of the island of Fugløy and the two pair teams have been escorted to Kollafjørður.

Faroese herring has been MSC certified since 2012, and now gets it re-certification, while this is a new certification for Faroese mackerel and blue whiting, each of which represents an approximately half-million tonne annual fishery.

The first pair of Vónin’s new pelagic trawl doors has been tested at sea with some highly encouraging results.

The MEST Shipyard in the Faroe Islands has contracted to build catamarans for aquaculture company Bakkafrost, with the first to be delivered in January 2017.

The longstanding dissatisfaction over mackerel continues to be a highly sensitive issue as anger has erupted yet again. A Faroese vessel landing in Skagen was reported to have misreported amounts of mackerel mixed in with its cargo of blue whiting and Shetland fishermen have responded with anger.

As well as its Storm and Tornado trawl door designs, Vónin and its Danish design partner have also developed the Flyer, a lift generating device that takes as much space as four floats in a trawl’s headline, but provides a significantly greater amount of lift.
