Now in its third and final phase, the Marine Management Organisation is urging owners of fishing vessels in the 6-12 metre size bracket to take advantage of grant funding available up to the end of next month.
There are 22 ports included in this third and final phase, which runs from 23rd October to 30th November. Owners of vessels over six metre vessels can still take advantage of funding of up to £1050 per vessel, by the deadline, before the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund closes.
The MMO has confirmed that 50% of the over six metre inshore fleet has now purchased a device, with many ports reporting over 75% of their fleet placing orders. Over 90% of those placing orders have claimed their grants and £400,000 has been paid out, with most payments made within 3-5 working days.
‘We’re in the final phase of the roll-out with just six weeks to go before the funding deadline. It’s crucial that fishers act right now and order a device if they are to take advantage of the funding,’ said Peter Clark, MMO’s Director of Operations.
‘It’s positive to see half of the over six metre fleet has ordered devices for their vessels, but there is a time limit to this funding and there are still too many owners taking the risk of having to pick up the full cost.’
MMO has confirmed it expects the Statutory Instrument to come into force in April 2024. An announcement on plans for the under-six-metre fleet is expected in due course.
