The value of exports of Norwegian seafood in January totalled NOK 4.2 billion. This is an increase of NOK 34 million compared to January 2011, according to the latest figures from the Norwegian Seafood Council.
”We have noted two general trends in January: on the one hand, there has been an increase in exports of products from fish caught in the wild such as herring, mackerel and clipfish. And on the other, the value of exports of Norwegian Salmon is showing a decline as a result of lower prices,” says Egil Ove Sundheim, director of market information with the Norwegian Seafood Council.

Norwegian Salmon exports up in volume, down in price
In January the value of exports of Norwegian Salmon totalled NOK 1.9 billion, down by NOK 423 million from January last year. The price of fresh whole Norwegian Salmon fell from NOK 39.47 to NOK 25.99 per kg. In terms of volume, however, exports of all Norwegian Salmon products increased by 12,000 tonnes to a total of 67,000 tonnes. France, Russia and Poland were the biggest importers of Norwegian Salmon.

Growth in exports of Norwegian Fjord Trout
The value of exports of Norwegian Fjord Trout increased in January by NOK 26 million to a total of NOK 146 million. Russia was the biggest market for Norwegian Fjord Trout in January.

Herring and mackerel exports up
Herring exports in January were up in value by NOK 190 million to a total of NOK 629 million. Russia is the fastest growing market, with exports in January up in value by NOK 42 million to a total value of NOK 168 million. Russia was also the biggest market for herring in January, followed by Germany and Ukraine.

Exports of mackerel in January increased in value by NOK 113 million to a total of NOK 351 million. The Netherlands was the fastest growing market, up in value by NOK 48 million to a total of NOK 55 million. This positions the Netherlands as the second biggest market for mackerel after China, to which exports of mackerel in January totalled NOK 88 million.

Clipfish exports also showing growth
In January, exports of clipfish increased in value by NOK 91 million to a total of NOK 350 million. Brazil was the biggest growth market, with exports up in value by NOK 75 million to a total of NOK 214 million. Exports to Portugal were up by NOK 12 million to a total of NOK 46 million.

Exports of salted fish down
The value of exports of salted fish was down by NOK 15 million in January to a total of NOK 37 million. Portugal remains our biggest market for salted fish with exports valued at NOK 14 million, although this is a decline of NOK 9 million compared to January last year. Exports to our next biggest market, Spain, increased in January by NOK 8 million to a total of NOK 12 million.

Growth in exports of fresh and frozen Norwegian Cod
Exports of fresh and frozen Norwegian Cod increased in value in January by NOK 89 million to a total of NOK 504 million. China was the biggest market, with exports valued at NOK 104 million. The USA showed the biggest growth in January, up by NOK 27 million to a total of NOK 42 million.
