2015 turned out to be a good year for Westmann Islands company Bergur-Huginn. Its two fresher trawlers landed catches worth ISK2285 million
Vestmannaey VE-444 landed 3864 tonnes of groundfish and Bergey VE-544 landed 3665 tonnes. In addition to their respectable catches, this is the highest catch value in the company’s history.
Established in 1972 to operate a newly-acquired newbuild from Japan, the original Vestmannaey, which was later converted to a freezer trawler, in recent years the company changed course to concentrate on landings for the fresh market. The original Vestmannaey was sold and replaced with three smaller fresher trawlers, while the company subsequently changed hands to become a subsidiary of Síldarvinnslan. Since 2012 Bergur-Huginn has operated the two 29 metre trawlers Vestmannaey and Bergey, built in Poland in 2006.
