Earlier this year Faroese pelagic vessel Tróndur í Gøtu suffered a gearbox breakdown, and with it clear that a new reduction gear is needed, it appears that it will be away from fishing grounds for the best part of a year.
Reduction gears on this scale aren’t something that’s available off-the-shelf, and producing a new one takes some months, so owners Varðin have searched for a replacement pelagic vessel to catch their quotas.
A deal has been struck with the owners of Danish vessel Gitte Henning, the largest and newest in the Danish fleet.
According to Varðin, the agreement with Gitte Henning’s owners is the culmination of a search for a suitable pelagic vessel capable of catching quotas for herring, mackerel and blue whiting, and with capacity to deliver the top-quality catches that their customers demand.
A lease agreement has been signed for Gitte Henning, which includes a purchase option. Gitte Henning will arrive in the Faroe Islands in late August or early September.
