HB Grandi’s pelagic production plant in Vopnafjördur is scheduled to re-start production of frozen herring next week. Staff summer holidays have meant that production has been suspended for a few weeks. According to production manager Magnús Róbertsson, the production lines are ready to run and he hopes that they will be receiving herring to process on Monday morning.
The Vopnafjördur plant has a staff of 45 and when enough fish is available, the production line runs around the clock in two 12-hour shifts. The herring is processed into flaps, or butterfly fillets, with a production capacity of between 130 and 140 tonnes per 24 hours.
All three of HB Grandi’s pelagic vessels have been fishing herring recently and catches have been good. Ingunn AK and Lundey NS were fishing well north of Melrakkaslétta two days ago and Ingunn is now in Vopnafjördur with a 1700 tonne catch on board that will be discharged today.
Lundey already had 1250 tonnes of herring on board when Ingunn left the fishing grounds and Lundey is now pair trawling opposite Faxi RE. According to pelagic operations manager Ingimundur Ingimundarson, fishing was slow yesterday and last night, and they are now again searching for herring.
