Following the two-day shutdown of the French fishing industry as a whole on 30-31st March to draw attention to the industry’s grievances, National Fisheries Committee (CNPMEM) president Olivier Le Nézet feels that the outcomes from fishermen’s efforts have been sufficient for the fleet to get back to sea as usual.
The concerted action by fishermen resulted in a meeting of industry figures and France’s Secretary of State for the Sea Hervé Berville with European Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevicius.
CNPMEM considers that the assurances and clarifications on the European Commission’s Action Plan, which is not a requirement but is to be implemented (or not) at the discretion of member states, and on the cetaceans initiatives have been robust enough to allow business to return to normal.
‘In any action, you have to know how to assess whether enough has been conceded,’ Olivier Le Nézet said.
‘I believe that our efforts have paid off and that the Commission and the government have satisfied us on the two main points. In addition, the State has made a commitment that the funds for overdue economic aid will be paid into accounts within four weeks. However, there are still subjects for discussion and we will continue this work alongside all the professional organisations.’
He commented that the State is still being asked to confirm its political commitment more clearly in relation to a review of de minimis aid, the review of the CFP and fleet renewal in external regions.
This action has been difficult for everyone, especially for all those in the sector who have suspended their activity for the wider cause. I thank the Minister for his attention and his commitment, while emphasising that much remains to be done,’ he said.
