Under an initiative by the Danish Pelagic Producers Organisation (DPPO), cameras are being fitted to Danish pelagic vessels to document and share data, with the intention of improving transparency in the supply chain.
According to the Danish Fisheries Agency, which is participtating in the initiative, the number of cameras depends on the specific vessel, but most are being fitted with five or six cameras. DPPO will make part of the data gathered available to the Agency.
‘We look forward to following the project and learning more about how fishermen will use data from the cameras to boost transparency and efficiency in the supply chain from catch to consumer,’ a representative of the Fisheries Agency commented.
Work has been in progress to identify optimum locations for the cameras on board each vessel, and installations are expected to be completed by the end of this year.
‘With DPPO’s new initiative, we will have even more transparency in the entire value chain from capture to production,’ said Anne Mette Bæk, managing director of the European Fishmeal and Fish oil Producers (EFFOP) and Marine Ingredients Denmark.
‘It’s a good addition to the camera system we have already established on the acquisition side, where the Danish Fisheries Agency can log on in real time at any time and follow discharging of vessels.’
