Only a couple of weeks after one record had been set for the largest capelin landing to date, Síldarvinnslan’s pelagic vessel Börkur has broken its own record with a landing of just over 3400 tonnes.
Skipper Hjörvar Hjálmarsson was delighted with the landing in Seyðisfjörður, and this catch of capelin was taken in eight hauls over four days.
‘We can’t complain over catch rates like that,’ he said, adding that there aren’t many pelagic vessels with the capacity to challenge this record.
‘There’s sister vessel Vilhelm Thorsteinsson, and Beitir, although Beitir’s carrying capacity is slightly smaller. As far as I know, only Danish pelagic vessel Ruth could break this record. Ruth is brand new, built like Vilhelm and Börkur at the Karstensen yard, and has slightly more carrying capacity.’
According to factory manager Eggert Ólafur Einarsson, discharging took eighteen hours.
‘This is excellent raw material and production is going well,’ he said, commenting that fishing has been good and there is plenty to work through, plus Barði is on the way in to land as well.
Börkur is back at sea, this time with Hálfdan Hálfdanarson in the skipper’s chair.
‘We sailed from Seyðisfjörður at six-thirty this morning and now we’re on the way to fishing grounds north of Langanes. There has been a storm since this afternoon, but it’s clearing up now,’ he said.
‘Everyone on board is happy to be experiencing a proper capelin season.’
