Stating that the sustainability of marine resources must necessarily go hand in hand with recognising the efforts of the fishing sector and guaranteeing its profitability, Spanish Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Luis Planas commented that ‘bluefin tuna is a good example of how species recovery and economic profitability are compatible.’
Addressing the 29th Ordinary Meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), he stressed that the recovery of the eastern bluefin tuna stock is an example of how sustainability and economic viability can go hand in hand.

‘Just two decades ago, the situation was very concerning, and today we can celebrate its recovery thanks to firm decisions always based on the best scientific knowledge,’ he said, adding that this achievement ‘would not have been possible without the commitment and exemplary adaptation of the fishing sector.’
The industry has accepted quota reductions and strict control measures for a number of years.
Recognising this effort, he stated, is fundamental ‘to ensure that fishing remains a profitable activity, a generator of employment, and essential for many coastal communities.’
Bluefin tuna is a key element of the negotiations taking place at this meeting, although, as the minister has noted, there are other equally important species, such as tropical tunas, swordfish and other related species, for which Spain also hopes for ‘fruitful results’.
Luis Planas emphasised the importance of ICCAT as a leading global organisation for the sustainable management of tuna and related species, comprised of 55 contracting parties. He also pointed out that Spain has maintained a long-standing relationship and a firm commitment to this Commission since 1969.
According to Minister Planas, ICCAT data demonstrates that science-based management works and that the collaborative efforts of the international community enable the recovery of iconic fish populations.
‘This is the way forward: responsible decisions, rigorous compliance, and stability so that the sector can maintain its activity profitably and sustainably,’ he said.
