With the year’s mackerel and Atlanto-Scandian herring fisheries over for the year, HB Grandi’s two pelagic vessels have now switched to blue whiting.
Pelagic vessels Venus and Víkingur have between them landed 29,000 tonnes of mackerel and Atlanto-Scandian herring this year and Garðar Svavarsson who heads the company’s pelagic division said that this summer’s fishing has been ideal.
‘According to the figures we have, 21,700 tonnes of mackerel and 7300 tonnes of Atlanto-Scandian herring have been landed between the 2nd of July and the end of September,’ he said.
Catches have been landed to the company’s pelagic factory in Vopnafjörður, which has been operating virtually around the clock while the season has lasted.
‘Now the boats have the Icelandic herring fishery to come, with 6200 tonnes left of the quota. But that will have to wait until the herring show up and they are trying their luck on blue whiting until then.’
