The pelagic vessels operated by Westman Islands company Vinnslustöðin have been on herring recently, but their season is now coming to an end.
Sighvatur Bjarnason has made its last landing of the season for Atlanto-Scandian herring, and Gullberg is about to dock with its final payload of the season.
‘We’ve taken delivery of 6500 tonnes of Atlanto-Scandian herring, producing butterfly fillets, fillets and wholefrozen fish,’ said Sindri Viðarsson who heads the company’s pelagic division.
He commented that the season for the Icelandic summer-spawning herring is expected to open in late October.
‘We also need to get some blue whiting, and expect that’ll be in October,’ he said.
Production manager Benóný Thórisson is happy with the fish that’s been landed.
‘It’s very good, excellent fish. Not much feed. It’s large fish, so good for filleting and fine for freezing. Good all round,’ he said, adding that production is around 370-380 tonnes over 24 hours, with everything landed going through production and trimmings going for fishmeal.
