Some time ago Vónin launched a large pelagic trawl that was intended for pair trawling. At that time the “Tróndur í Gøtu” (now “Pacific Hunter”) got one and it was mainly used for Herring fishery in Smuthavet. The performance of the trawl was quite extraordinary, and the catches were 5 to 6 times higher than towing with one vessel using trawl doors.
During the Mackerel fishery this summer, this trawl caught a big share of the quota. The vessels “Finnur Fríði”, “Fagraberg”, and the new “Tróndur í Gøtu” all had one of these trawls, and they were all doing well. When comparing the catch rate of the vessels towing on their own to the pair-trawlers, again, the same factor of 5 to 6 times higher was a fact.
The size of the trawl is 2688 meters in circumference with 64 metre meshes in the forenet. It has been thorougly reinforced to withstand the enormous power of the vessels with 8000 to 11000 horse power engines.
