All of HB Grandi’s fresher trawlers are now tied up for the break in fishing and production over Christmas. The last to land its fish was Akurey which docked in Reykjavík yesterday with 130 tonnes on board, and skipper Eiríkur Jónsson is satisfied with the trip.
‘There was a storm blowing when we sailed, and after that we had a spell of decent weather. There was some good fishing for cod in the Víkuráll Gully, with some fine, large cod to be had there. The fish is stuffed full of capelin, and that looks promising,’ he said, and went on to say that when the cod fishing slowed down, they shifted further north for saithe and redfish on Westfjords grounds.
‘Tuesday was lost as it was blowing a gale but before we headed for home we managed some good fishing for cod on the corner of the Thveráll Gully.’
He added that altogether, it has been a good year.
‘We’re fishing more on the Westfjords fishing grounds than we did before and the fishing has been good, and steady,’ Eiríkur Jónsson said.
Engey’s skipper Friðleifur Einarsson had much the same to say, commenting that as the company’s fresher trawlers are increasingly targeting cod, they are spending more time off the Westfjords to find cod.
‘It has been a good year. Steady good fishing, but the weather, especially recently, could have been better,’ he said.
