A donation of USD I million has been offered by the UN to rebuild the artisanal fishery that was affected by the earthquake that occurred in the country on 27 February. UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Subsecretariat of Fisheries (Subpesca) of Chile have pushed this initiative and the grant was financed by the Central Emergency Response Fund of the United Nations (CERF).
According to the information the aid is expected to benefit some 6,900 fishermen of at least 15 coves in the regions of Maule and Bio Bio, which were most affected by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami.
The head of Subpesca, Pablo Galilea, and the FAO Representative in Chile, Alejandro Flores participated in the donation. According to Flores, it is necessary to help the affected fishermen, “and we know the importance of the sector for the country and the many families who depend on it to survive,” reports Ansa.
