As per the information released by VASEP high seafood consumption demand in Ukraine market increases exports of Vietnamese product to the country at phenomenal rate. Ukrainian market has been continuously thrived over the past 10 years and really became the “phenomenon” of 2008 with the record growth rate compared to other markets.
The official figure shows that in 1999, Vietnam only exported about 9 tons of seafood to Ukraine, valued at 30.9 thousand USD. This figure increased by six fold in the next 3 years and increased with higher rate in the next years. In 2005, Ukraine imported 851 tons of seafood from Vietnam, in 2006: 9.8 thousand tons, in 2007: 26 thousand tons and recorded 78.87 thousand tons in 2008.
But in 2009 seafood export to Ukrainian market was declined to 40.3 thousand tons. According to the newest statistics of Vietnam Customs, Ukraine has imported 16.8 thousand tons, worth 32.4 million USD in the first 8 months of 2010. Currently, Vietnamese and Chinese seafood prices are cheaper than other countries’ seafood available in Ukraine market.
At present, Vietnamese seafood is much favored in Ukraine because of its taste and reasonable price. In the coming time, in order to boost export activity, Vietnam and Ukraine will soon sign bilateral agreement and consider about export turnover allocation in fisheries sector. Up to now, seafood demand in Ukraine has been very high.
