Australian fisherman Jake Parkhill from Miranda Bay was fishing in a hundred metres of water, fifty miles east of Lakes Entrance, and couldn’t believe his eyes when the seine net was hauled.
Among the fish, they had caught a postman’s Honda CT90 Trail 90 motorbike. These were manufactured between 1966 and 1979, and it’s known as a postie bike as they were widely used by postal services in Australia and New Zealand.
The mystery is how the bike found its way out there, and the marine growth on it suggests it has been there for some years. Too heavy to be pulled currents, the theory is that is must have come from a ship – and the Bass Strait oil and gas fields were in development at the time postie bikes were in widespread use.
At the time, they sold for US$330, while a fully restored CT90 can sell today for up to US$2750 on eBay.
But this one won’t be restored. Instead, it’s in the boat’s shed as a trophy.
