A contract has been concluded for the construction of a new 80 metre factory trawler for Canadian company Niqitaq.

The Skipsteknisk-designed vessel will be built at the Tersan yard in Turkey, the yard’s third newbuild for Canadian owners.

The design is for a twin-rigger intended to operate on shrimp and Greenland halibut, with catches frozen on board. Carrying capacity is estimated at 1320 tonnes of frozen Greenland halibut, or 930 tonnes when fishing for shrimp.

Accommodation is for a crew of up to 38 and the new vessel will be outfitted and equipped for fishing in the North Atlantic and polar areas including NEAFAC, NAFO and ICES regulatory areas.
Niqitaq Fisheries is a fully owned subsidiary of Baffin Fisheries Company from Canada which was incorporated at 2001.

The company is a leading commercial fishing enterprise in Northern Canada, harvesting more than 10,000 tons of Greenland Halibut (turbot) and cold-water shrimp annually. Their current fleet consists of three factory fishing vessels.
