Europêche representatives defended and promoted full respect for the social and labour rights of all fishing vessel’s crews and demanded that the same level of compliance must be required for all countries during the Tripartite Meeting on Issues Relating to Migrant Fishers held by the International Labour Organization (ILO) during the last week in Geneva.

When Life Cell inventor Scott Smiles went to sea for what was supposed to be a short pleasure trip, the result was far from what he had expected. Something went catastrophically wrong – and he and his friend Rick and their respective sons Riley and Ryan found themselves in the water, clinging to a cool box and having grabbed a hand-held radio from the boat before it went down.

A group of Spanish fishing associations that are all members of ARVI (the Vigo Fishing Shipowners’ Cooperative) have unanimously approved a code of practice that incorporates the requirements of the International Labour Organisation’s C188 Work in Fishing convention.

Successful PFD scheme ends

A successful four-year scheme, run by the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation (SFF), to increase the use of safety devices, has now come to an end. Around 3500 personal flotation devices (PFDs) have been supplied to fishermen working on Scottish-registered boats.
