SweDen Pelagic has reached an agreement with Launis A/S to acquire the entire shareholding of Danish company Nielsens Fiskeeksport, based at Ålbæk in Jutland. The new owners have already taken over management of the Danish company which is Denmark’s second largest producer of herring for the food industry.
SweDen Pelagic, which is owned by Västkustfisk SVC AB in Sweden and FF Skagen A/S in Denmark, is Sweden’s leading herring and sprat producer, manufacturing a variety of semi-finished products for the food industry
According to the company, now that the acquisition of Nielsen Fiskeeksport has taken place, production be centred in four locations, Ålbæk in Denmark, at Västervik and Gotland on the Swedish east coast and at Ellös in the west of Sweden.
‘The purpose of acquiring Nielsens Fiskeeksport A/S is to strengthen SweDen Pelagic at the international market for herring products. There has been a consolidation within primary production of herring products within the past years and we see the acquisition of Nielsens Fiskeeksport A/S as a natural step in strengthening the group,’ said SweDen Pelagic CEO Peter Sjöholm
‘Furthermore, the acquisition will strengthen co-operation with our loyal suppliers of premium herring and who have invested in new fishing vessels over the past years in order to secure good quality, healthy raw material – the herring.’
He commented that in order to produce the best herring, there needs to be a seamless process from sea to table – from the moment the fish are caught to when they are put into barrels.
According to Peter Sjöholm, Nielsens Fiskeeksport A/S and SweDen Pelagic both have a reputation for high quality and high delivery liability.
‘The companies have built up this reputation by combining good raw materials with new techniques and with the daily efforts made by around 120 skilled staff. Ole Holm and the staff at Nielsens Fiskeeksport will continue to ensure the high product quality that characterises the company, and continue their good co-operation with customers and suppliers.’
Products are sold as either soured, spiced or salted herring. Production is based on their own recipes or customer requirements.
The group expects to produce and sell approximately 18,000 tonnes of herring products annually following the acquisition of Nielsen Fiskeeksport A/S.
