According to Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson, head of HB Grandi’s pelagic division, a deep depression forming west of Ireland and the resulting storm was the reason for calling Ingunn and Lundey home. Ingunn has 1500 tonnes on board and Lundey has a similar amount.
Faxi RE is still on the fishing grounds and there are hopes that the weather will moderate later today so that fishing can resume. Faxi had managed two hauls before the storm hit the fishing grounds.
Stefán Geir Jónsson, skipper of Lundey on this trip, said that there had been appalling weather conditions for a few hours while they had been steaming last night.
‘There was no choice but to stop and dodge. The weather dropped away towards morning and we were able to set course for home again. The weather is still very bad and it seems that this patch of bad weather extends all the way north to 60°N. We still have 60 or 70 miles to go before we can expect it to improve,’ Stefán Geir Jónsson said when we spoke to him at midday, when Lundey was 300 nautical miles south east of Reykjanes.
