Cape Sable Island lobster buyer Terry Zinck, expressed that relative to the economy they are doing all right as the product is moving out relatively well. The price is holding and that’s important. There is a need to maintain the status quo to keep product moving. He also said that all in all, with the exception of resistance in the marketplace, it isn’t playing out that much different than any other year.
Zinck said that he had been talking daily with customers, who are giving them some hope the orders are going to come through. Traditionally the week before Christmas is when live lobsters are shipped to international and overseas markets for the holiday season. As for landings, the catch is reportedly up for many Shelburne County, N.S. fishermen, especially those fishing LFA 33. Lobster quality has also been top notch this season, opined Zinck.
It is informed that lobster fishermen continued to get $3 to $3.40 a pound for their catch in mid-December, compared to $5 to $7 a pound the year before. The low price and sluggish markets had prompted numerous promotional moves from the community, and has made lobster headline news across North America.
