South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council, a federal fisheries management agency, has banned the fishing of snapper off the southeast Atlantic so that it cold boost the stocks of the species. Fishermen in Atlantic waters, from North Carolina to south Florida, will be not be allowed to catch red snapper in those waters.
Chris Conklin, co-owner of Seven Seas seafood market in Murrells Inlet, says that ban will push fishermen into South Carolina waters. He told that this ban will decimate them in the long run. That’s something that fishermen say is unsustainable and will drive many local fishermen out of business.
As per local fishermen this is going to affect a lot of people. A livelihood that could be threatened even more with the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, as fishermen there eye Atlantic waters. Conklin says they want something that works for the fish and the fishermen.
