There has been little fishing on blue whiting grounds in the Faroese EEZ over the last few days as fishing has dropped away. Síldarvinnslan’s two pelagic vessels Beitir and Börkur have been searching north of the Faroes with limited success.
Beitir has 1700 tonnes on board and Börkur has 1500 tonnes, so their trips are coming to an end shortly if there is nothing to be had.
‘We’re heading for the Rose Garden now and if there’s no fishing there, then we’ll be heading home so we can make the most of the Seamen’s Day weekend. Of course we’re searching, but the fishing has been next to nothing for the last few days,’ said Beitir’s skipper Tómas Kárason, adding that the trip had started with fine fishing.
Margrét landed 1700 tonnes of blue whiting to Síldarvinnslan’s Seyðisfjörður factory and Bjarni Ólafsson landed 1800 tonnes in Neskaupstaður.
Bjarni Ólafsson’s skipper Gísli Runólfsson said that their trip had been a good one.
‘We filled up in around 48 hours in four hauls. Things were already changing as we set a course for home and now there’s nothing to be had,’ he said.
‘Now we’re just washing down the ship and cleaning up for Seamen’s Day. It’s peace and quiet here,’ he said.
