U.S. Coast Guard searchers continue their operation in a hope that the captain of a fishing boat that capsized overnight has survived at sea and will be rescued. U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Connie Terrell said that they actively searching for the captain. It is said that the captain of the New Bedford-based Costa & Corvo was separated from his three crew members around midnight and hasn’t been seen since.
The Coast Guard informed that the three crew members were rescued from 58 degree water after the 71-foot vessel experienced trouble at about midnight. The boat was about 115 miles east of Cape Cod. Terrell said that the captain and crew were fishing for tuna in calm seas when the boat suddenly capsized. As per the crew the boat capsized so quickly they don’t know what happened. They didn’t have time to even put on a life jacket.
The Mary K, the Costa & Corvo’s sister ship, reported they had been fishing about two miles away when they lost sight of the Costa & Corvo. Crew members on the Mary K responded to a marine assistance request and rescued three Costa & Corvo crew members who had been in the water for up to 20 minutes. It is said that the Costa & Corvo was fishing in calm waters when it capsized. Terrell also informed that seas were less than one foot, wind was at 5 knots and there was clear visibility.
According to Terrell the three rescued crew members were not seriously hurt and remained on the Mary K after being evaluated by the Coast Guard. The crew members will be transferred soon to the Coast Guard cutter the Grand Isle, which is one of the cutters being used to search for the captain, opined Terrell.
