Seafish has announced a change to the way it will structure training delivery for the seafood industry in future, a move that will see more funds passed directly to fishermen and other training recipients. The change will be phased in by 2010 and will be managed by two regional co-ordinators.
Seafish is committed to delivering training to the whole industry and to the catching sector in particular, to ensure that fishermen receive the best training possible, with safety as a priority. The role of Seafish is to maximise funding for training at the grassroots and the restructuring will see more funding, in the form of a voucher system, delivered directly to those receiving the training.
Seafish Chief Executive John Rutherford said: “We are determined to derive maximum value from our levy to support training for the UK seafood industry and this move will enable us to do that much more effectively. We have been talking with industry and training providers about the future of training provision and we believe that this decision will deliver where it is needed most – directly to those being trained, and especially to fishermen, whose safety is paramount.”
Seafish is inviting opinions on how this new direction should be implemented from all stakeholders with an interest in training for the seafood industry and will be visiting Group Training Associations and other training providers in the coming weeks to define the future for seafood training in more detail.
