The innovative new trawler delivered by Damen Shipyards to New Zealand fishing company Sanford has completed its long delivery trip, and the official handover of San Koura Rangi will now take place before it starts fishing in NZ waters.
Based on Damen’s SeaFisher 3210 design, San Koura Rangi’s development was a collaborative process between Damen’s designers and Sanford staff to build a highly energy-efficient fishing vessel that meets all of Sanford’s specific requirements within a compact and efficient design.
As well as diesel-electric propulsion with a power management system to optimise engine operations and a take-me-home back-up option, San Koura Rangi has a suite of electric winches from Naust Marine that have the capacity to route energy back to the vessel’s power management system.

Further innovations include fans and large motors are on variable speed drives. In colder climates in or near the Southern Ocean, the fans can slow down to reduce energy usage. Sanford has focused on using a robust long-lasting paint and anti-fouling coating system, which reduce paint consumption and reduce solvent release to the atmosphere.
The choice has gone to CO2 as the refrigeration gas to be use on board, and while this is still a greenhouse gas, it is a significant improvement on CFSs and HFCs as a refrigerant.
Sanford’s new trawler also features the latest safety facilities for the crew, and the design takes into account the need to cater for crrews spending extended periods at sea
The processing deck is functionally optimised to streamline onboard procedures while maintaining strict hygiene standards with a-state-of-art freezer system for optimal catch preservation. Processing has been developed to meet New Zealand’s strict hygiene requirements, ensuring optimal food safety and responsible working conditions for the crew.
San Koura Rangi also has advanced bird protection systems and sophisticated waste management.
‘This vessel is a major step forward in our ambition to reduce the carbon footprint of our operations at sea,’ said Sanford project manager Elliot Kendrick.
‘Together with Damen, we’ve developed a vessel that reflects our shared values of sustainability, innovation, and craftsmanship.’
Sea trials took place following the completion of construction at Damen’s Stellendam site and technical acceptance took place in February this year. San Koura Rangi’s steelwork was fabricated by a shipbuilder in Poland, and brought to Stellendam for outfitting.
‘The collaboration has been not only productive, but very rewarding. This vessel represents a joint achievement in sustainable innovation,’ said said Pim Schuurman, Damen’s regional sales director for New Zealand.
