All of the European and North American fishing industry assets of Icelandic fishing giant Samherji have been acquired by an unnamed Dutch company owned by Netherlands resident Baldvin Thorsteinsson – the son of one of the Samherji founders and CEO Thorsteinn Már Baldvinsson.
Samherji’s operations went through a process of separation in 2018, with activity in Iceland remaining under Samherji hf, while overseas business was transferred first to Samherji Holding ehf and these overseas assets subsequently transferred to Alda Seafood, a subsidiary of Samherji Holding, with the ownership remaining unchanged.
Arrangements have been made for the assets of Alda Seafood to be transferred to the Dutch company, which is majority owned by Baldvin Thorsteinsson, giving him and his company control of Alda Seafood’s holdings in fishing companies in Europe – including UK Fisheries, Euronor, DFFU and others – and in North America.
A stake in shipping company Eimskip is not part of the deal and this shareholding remains in the hands of Samherji Holding’s owners.
