A group of staff from Samherji’s Dalvík processing plant embarked on a course of study at the SÍMEY training college in Dalvík starting in the autumn of 2016, followed by second group the company’s Dalvík and Akureyri factories last autumn.
There are several nationalities among those taking part, reflecting the international nature of the staff at Samherji’s processing plants; with three of Polish origin, two from Lithuania, two from Thailand and one from Cape Verde among the students. According to Samherjji it has never been more important for the company that its staff seek further training, considering the increasingly technical nature of the industry and the high standards it needs to adhere to.
The course of training is a co-operative venture between SÍMEY, the the Icelandic Fisheries College and the Tröllaskagi College, which runs the course divided into 120 study units, with the underpinning knowledge units handled by SÍMEY and the specialised technical units by the Tröllaskagi College. Students applying to take part in the course do so on the basis of a prior knowledge assessment, plus three years’ industry experience and a minimum age of 23. This means that these students are all experienced in seafood processing prior to starting their studies.
‘Their work colleagues are all proud of this talented group’s achievements, and we are sure that their skills will be highly valued now that they have completed this course,’ a Samherji spokesman said.
